A janela no contexto urbano do início do século XX à actualidade

Abstract

O objecto desta tese está de certo modo definido no título: a janela como elemento arquitectónico, no espaço doméstico de contexto urbano. É através da janela que se pretendem enquadrar as mudanças nos modos de habitar na cidade, Lisboa em particular, e num arco temporal que corresponde ao século XX. A habitação de carácter urbano seja unifamiliar seja plurifamiliar, observa certas condicionantes prévias à sua construção: a matriz fundiária do espaço, a malha urbana, ou as relações estabelecidas quer empiricamente quer por obediência a regulamentos. Por conseguinte, é também deste cruzar de factores que se constrói a arquitectura da cidade, onde se cruzam a jusante os privados, e o autor de projecto como mediador activo destes dados objectivos, subjectivos, formais ou informais. Os vãos de janela constituem-se então como um indicador sensível do processo intrínseco à construção invisível da arquitectura. Um elemento que de algum modo, ajusta os pretextos da arquitectura. A janela é aqui entendida como interface entre exterior e interior. É o elemento material dessa relação que configura as fronteiras entre o território do público e do privado. O sistema relacional que a janela corporiza é ele próprio dependente dos modos de habitar: num sentido lato do “habitar/fruir a cidade” mas fundamentalmente na inscrição no espaço doméstico.

ABSTRACT: The subject of this thesis is somewhat defined in title: the window as architectural element, in the domestic space on urban context. It is intended to frame the changes on the ways of inhabiting the city, Lisbon in particular, through the window, in the course of a temporal span that corresponds to the 20th century. Urban housing, single or multifamily, observes certain constraints that are prior to its construction: the groundwork matrix, the urban fabric, or the relations that are established empirically or by obedience to regulations. Therefore, it is also through these crossing factors that architecture is built, in this intersection between the privates and the project author, as an active mediator of objective, subjective, formal, or informal data. The window is seen as a sensitive indicator of the inherent process to the architecture invisible building. An element that somehow adjusts the architecture pretexts. Here the window is understood as the interface between exterior and interior. It is the material element of the relationship that configures the boundaries between the public and private territory. The relational system that the window embodies is itself dependent on modes of dwelling: in a broad sense of "inhabit/enjoying the city", but fundamentally in the enrolment of the domestic space.
