Caelius Aurelianus and portuguese Late Renaissance medicine :
some notes on his influence

This chapter offers a short summary of the likely points of influence Caelius Aurelianus had on Portuguese medicine during the Renaissance. It also measures the extent to which this late antique doctor became an important source for Portuguese medical writers. Although Caelius Aurelianus became known in this medical community, they tended to consult him for specific information that was not likely to be available in the writings of his contemporaries. They consulted him for solid information about rabies and its symptoms and also about women’s diseases including tribades.
The illusion of tradition :
mythographical speech and λόγοι in the prologue of Euripides’ Heracles

In this chapter, the focus is on the prologue to Heracles, with the argument that Euripides employs mythographical speech for a poetic purpose. It will be argued that the mythographical style and approach in the prologue serve, on one hand, to present Euripides' innovation as part of tradition, and on the other, to contribute to the characterization of Amphitryon as a powerless old man whose manner of speaking and whose stories hold no value, as they fail to save Heracles' children. The thesis posits that the mythographical genre had already reached a level of maturity sufficient for Euripides and his audience — at least part of it — to recognize it as a distinct type of speech: a new discourse about the past, far removed from the old epic heroes, and equally distant from reality and effectiveness.

The students of Medicine and Fine Arts at Lisbon's Anatomical Theatres and the two anatomical drawing collections of the University of Lisbon

In Portugal, anatomy has played a crucial role in medical education, progressing from theoretical teachings in the beginning of the 19th century to a more interactive approach through the 1836 teaching reform. This reform introduced open dissection sessions for students and the public, along with the establishment of the Anatomical Theater. The 1865 partnership between the Medical-Surgical School and the Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon further enriched anatomy education for students in both fields. This collaboration yielded two anatomical drawing collections, currently housed in the Faculties of Medicine and Fine Arts in Lisbon. These collections, featuring over 2400drawings from the early 20th century, highlight the works of porminent Portuguese artists. Professor Henrique Vilhena played a pivotal role in establishing these anatomical drawing collections, the Anatomy Institute, and its archive.
