Resumo: As the search for equids as animals for both sport and companionship increases it becomes necessary to better know the conditions inherent to their production. For this study we used animals raised in extensive regime in the Horse Stud Farm of Alter do Chão, with the objective of characterizing their gastrointestinal parasitism according to an array of factors such as race/ species, age, inbreed level, availability of grass and its seasonal change. The study included 2 species, Equus ferus spp. przewalskii and E. caballus (races Sorraia e Lusitana). We then proceeded to monthly collections throughout the year, adding up to 20 faecal samples a month distributed as follows: 10 Lusitanos, 7 Sorraias e 3 Przewalskii. At the laboratory, coprological exams were performed, both qualitative (flotation and sedimentation) and quantitative (McMaster slide), for egg identification and counts, and fecal cultures (Roberts O’Sullivan), to identify L3 larvae. Calculation of prevalence and proportional abundance of genera/species was performed too. All of the individuals present in this study were infected by nematodes of the Strongilidae family, with seasonal peaks in Spring and Autumn. The more marked oscillations were detected in the Przewalski horse group, obtaining near zero counts in August. In fecal cultures, the L3 larvae belonged to two groups, Strongylus vulgaris e Cyathostomum sensum latum, with prevalences of 100% and proportional abundances of 20% and 80% of the total identified L3, respectively. In the count of L3 larval stages by ml, we obtained means relatively constant along the year except in the case of the Przewalski horses, that showed a marked variation, indicating greater susceptibility to water as a limiting factor. Intestinal strongyles were the only group of parasites found, with particular interest to Cyathostomum and Strongylus. Differences were observed pertaining to race/species and season, suggesting different strategies to face gastrointestinal parasitism.
