Title: Criação de uma xiloteca electrónica (e-xiloteca) tropical e sua utilização para identificação e caracterização de madeiras com fins científicos e económicos

Abstract: The necessity of sustainable tropical forests has contributed for a more rational use of their resources based on scientific knowledge and organized information. This work was based on two xylaria from the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (285 samples from Mozambique, Timor and India collections) and other 15 species from Mozambique. The available information was verified and completed, the anatomical characterization of new species was made, macro and microphotographies were taken and colorimetric parameters were measured (L*, a*, b*). A virtual wood collection (e-xylarium) was created by gathering and structuring information on nomenclature, structure ans anatomy, physical and macroscopic characteristics and potential uses. Queries were designed for different purposes. Numeric taxonomy grouped all wood samples by similarity classes taking into account their origin and the anatomical and physical characteristics. A high canonical correlation was obtained between anatomical and physical data, such as: direct correlation of volumetric shrinkage, L* and a* with vessel number and wall thickness and indirect correlation with vessel diameter; direct correlation of radial shrinkage with vessel diameter; direct correlation between ray width, fibre lenght and vessel element lenght with humidity and indirect correlation with density, axial shrinkage and b*
