Resumo: Land use and climate are physically linked. This work studies the reciprocal influence between the mediterranean type climate and the development and growth of sunflower, in different radiative, aerodynamic, thermal and hydrological conditions obtained with two sowing dates and two population densities in the years of 1997 to 1999, near Évora. Sunflower phenology and leaf production rates were controlled by temperature. The crop adapted to the different conditions mainly by adjusting leaf area index, which was greater at higher densities and under favourable water availability. The fraction of intercepted solar radiation and biomass production increased with leaf area index, but radiation use efficiency (1.5 g MJ-1) was similar in all situations. Earlier sowing dates of rainfed sunflower increased yield under mediterranean conditions. The increase of population and water availability lead to a decrease in albedo, an increase of net radiation, an increase of surface roughness and a decrease of aerodynamic resistance, allowing surface conditions to affect more the lower atmosphere and the microclimate.
