A gravidez é vista como um período de experiências ricas, cheio de expectativas e simbolismos e, potencialmente, crítico ou de crise, e de maior vulnerabilidade pessoal. Se por um lado, a gravidez corresponde a uma fase feliz da vida da mulher e do homem, através da qual ambos ascendem a uma desejada parentalidade, muitas outras são caracterizadas por vivências ou acontecimentos de vida que as marcam como períodos complexos e difíceis.
Embora os conceitos de gravidez e maternidade se encontrem tendencialmente associados, representam realidades distintas e, do ponto de vista psicológico, a possibilidade de divergência nas suas vivências pode facilmente ocorrer. Várias são as situações em que o desejo de ter um filho e o desejo de ser mãe, não são coincidentes, não existindo sequer um projecto de maternidade definido.
Este estudo pretende analisar de que modo as representações sociais, inerentes à gravidez, podem determinar ou condicionar um projecto de maternidade, tendo como base oito mulheres que viveram a gravidez e pós-parto em acolhimento institucional. São explorados os significados e impactos da gravidez e, em particular, a forma como estas mulheres se posicionam perante critérios e condutas valorizados, no contexto de acolhimento e de maternidade, dominantes na sociedade.
Pregnancy is conceived as a period of experiences, full of expectations and symbolism, during critical times of great personal vulnerability. If, on the one hand, pregnancy is a happy period of a women and men’s life, in which both win the desire of parenthood, on the other hand, many other are characterized by life events that mark them as a difficult and complex time. Although the concept of pregnancy and motherhood tend to usually be associated, they represent different realities, and from the psychological point of view, the possibility of divergence in their experiences can easily occur. There are several situations where the wish to have a baby and the desire to be a mother do not coincide, a clear project of motherhood being, in most cases, nonexistent. This study aims to analyze how the social representations, related to pregnancy, can determine or affect a project of motherhood, based on the study of eight cases of women who have experienced pregnancy and post-partum in an institutional shelter. The study explores the meanings and impacts of pregnancy and, in particular, how these women stand towards the criteria and behaviors appreciated by mainstream society, in what motherhood is concerned.
