Abstract: The undertaken study of an environmental diagnosis in Ribeira da Barca, municipality of Santa Catarina of Santiago Island, in order to identify, assess, and characterize the changes in the landscape, caused by the activities of extraction in the craters, to estimate the amount of inert (sand/gravel) extracted over time. The field monitoring works were undertaken from November 2010 until May 2011. The landscape studied fits well in a process of transformation by negative anthropogenic actions, regarding the extraction, to the trade in sand and gravel. The watershed riverbed is totally drilled with craters of dimensions ranging from 2.6 m till 46,90 m of length; height/depth of 0.12 m till 2.70 m, causing a distortion in visual character of the entire watershed stream. The twenty three (23) craters monitored during six months of the study, 26.1% of them (around 6), had a considerable evolution in terms of length, and height/depth; 34.8% (around 8) had a less considerable evolution; 39.1% (around 9) did not have any evolution. It becomes necessary to adequate a strategy that can act in a “positive” way, based on a process of landscape rehabilitation
